The Bear Wallow Mountain Experience

The Bear Wallow Mountain event is quite an experience. I had the opportunity to go in 1994, and will remember it as long as I live. It was quite a journey up the mountain to 4250 feet above sea level, but once we arrived, I found that it was worth the trip.

Our site at Bear Wallow is courtesy of W4SIS, and his pull with a few friends. It is a private site, with no through traffic to contend with.

As you can see, the path up the mountain is all dirt and rather steep. A couple of the vehicles got stuck and had to work at the road to make it up.

The site was beautiful one for the June VHF Contest. We had a large tent (thanks to KQ4MS!), with separate sleeping quarters, mess tent, etc. We had antennas up for 6 M FM and SSB, 2 M FM and SSB, 220 SSB, 440 FM, and 432 SSB.

Here, a couple of the guys (Tripp N4NTO and Glenn KD4BSP) are just getting up for another day of VHF/UHF contesting.

The contesting was fast and furious, but there was lots of fun and fellowship as well. The Bear Wallow Mountain trip is one I look forward to again!
