FIELD DAY 2002
Teara's 2002 Field Day Exercise
Our FD Operation from Kerr Lake
In an effort to
make this page load more quickly, I've installed some of the images to be accessed through
hypertext links below.
At the top, you'll see the site for the 2002
TEARA Field Day activities. It was held in the beautiful settings of a Kerr Lake campground,
just across the state line, in the edge of Virginia. Notice the small red thing...that was
Chris KC4YLE's Honda generator. It has to be the most quiet generator I've ever seen/heard!
We had 8 operators and the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful weekend
in the campground. We were set up at the waters edge, and had boats and ski'ers to watch while
operating. We utilized an existing shelter owned by the camping club, and it had concrete
floor, tables/benches, etc. It was a perfect site for operations. We cooked on site, and had a blast!
The primary station operated under the call sign of AC4UD. We used dipole antennas for HF
operations, launched up into the trees in the campground by AC4UD and his fishing rod, and by WB4IUY
and his wrist-rocket slingshot. The VHF
operations were via a 2m Diamond vertical up in the trees. The
primary operations were powered by 4 deep cycle batteries, that ran us for the entire event
without issue! We recharged them via KC4YLE's super-quiet generator.
The wx was perfect for the entire weekend, though a cool breeze blew in during the night on
Saturday, and made "bundling up" a necessity. We operated 80m through 10m Phone/CW, as well as
packet radio on APRS. Surprisingly enough, we landed many contacts on APRS packet radio from
that location.
We all had a great time, and much was learned for next year's activities. Operators on site
were: Holt AC4UD, Ronnie WA4MJF, Sherry KB4EXL, Glenn KD4BSP, Steve KD4WIW, Chris KF4DBX, Nate,
and Dave WB4IUY. It was a short weekend,
and time seemed to pass quickly. As usual, we all had some good laughs, and began to discuss
how we could do a better job with emergency communications. Check out the pics below of our
